Forecasting the Return Distribution Using High-Frequency Volatility Measures

چکیده
The aim of this paper is to forecast (out-of-sample) the distribution of financial returns based on realized volatility measures constructed from high-frequency returns. We adopt a semi-parametric model for the distribution by assuming that the return quantiles depend on the realized measures and evaluate the distribution, quantile and interval forecasts of the quantile model in comparison to a benchmark GARCH model. The results suggest that the model outperforms an asymmetric GARCH specification when applied to the S&P 500 futures returns, in particular on the right tail of the distribution. However, the model provides similar accuracy to a GARCH(1,1) model when the 30-year Treasury bond futures return is considered. JEL Classification: C14; C22; C53

A key problem in financial econometrics is the modeling, estimation and forecasting of conditional return volatility and correlation. Having accurate forecasting models for conditional volatility and correlation is important for accurate derivatives pricing, risk management and asset allocation decisions. It is well known that conditional volatility and correlation are highly predictable. An in...

I n this paper, we specify that the GARCH(1,1) model has strong forecasting volatility and its usage under the truncated standard normal distribution (TSND) is more suitable than when it is under the normal and student-t distributions. On the contrary, no comparison was tried between the forecasting performance of volatility of the daily return series using the multi-step ahead forec...
متن کاملRoughing It Up: Including Jump Components in the Measurement, Modeling and Forecasting of Return Volatility
A rapidly growing literature has documented important improvements in financial return volatility measurement and forecasting via use of realized variation measures constructed from high-frequency returns coupled with simple modeling procedures. Building on recent theoretical results in Barndorff-Nielsen and Shephard (2004a, 2005) for related bi-power variation measures, the present paper provi...

We find that augmenting a regression of excess bond returns on the term structure of forward rates with a rolling estimate of the mean realized jump size—identified from high-frequency bond returns using the bi-power variation technique—substantially increases the R2 of the regression. This result is consistent with the setting of an unspanned risk factor in which the conditional distribution o...

Measuring and forecasting volatility of asset returns is very important for asset trading and risk management. There are various forms of volatility estimates, including implied volatility, realized volatility and volatility assumed under stochastic volatility models and GARCH models. Research has shown that these different methods are closely related but have different perspectives, strengths ...
